LSU football spring football observations: Notes on Jacobian Guillory, look at backup QB (2025)

BATON ROUGE – Pads were cracking again on the practice fields at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility Tuesday morning, signaling the end of Spring Break.

LSU football held its 11th practice of the spring as the team's work gears up towards its open scrimmage inside Tiger Stadium this Saturday. Due to maneuvering in the schedule, LSU's National L Club Spring Football Practice won't be the final one of the spring like usual as two practices were moved back to the following week.

LSU football injury news: Jacobian Guillory participated

While it was not full-go or full-contact, it was encouraging to see senior defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory working through some individual, non-contact skill drills with the interior linemen.

Guillory tore his Achilles tendon in the Nicholls State game back in September and LSU coach Brian Kelly has previously said that the team's June offseason work is the target date to get him fully back, along with other defensive stars Harold Perkins Jr. and Whit Weeks, and ready to play.

Backup QB Michael Van Buren works through off-platform drills

We've seen it some this spring with starter Garrett Nussmeier, so it's possible that getting the quarterback out of the pocket more will be something offensive coordinator Joe Sloan utilizes often in 2025.

But during the viewing period Tuesday morning, backup signal caller Michael Van Buren was seen running through a number of playcall designs that had him throwing on the run and making reads.

Van Buren's athleticism stands out and his arm is live enough with accuracy that he's impressed in these situations.

Oklahoma transfer Nic Anderson more involved

New wide receiver Nic Anderson was more involved during the 20 minutes the media got to view practice this morning, getting more reps with the second offense. It seems to have taken him a little longer than some of the other transfer wide outs to start carving out a role but it appears that as the spring is winding down, Anderson, the transfer from Oklahoma, is starting to find his footing.

At 6-4, 210, Anderson could be a major asset for Nussmeier and the offense this year.

LSU defensive lineman Ahmad Breaux continues solid spring

LSU ran a drill for lines of scrimmage where the defensive linemen take on double teams from two offensive linemen. During this work, LSU sophomore Ahmad Breaux consistency caused havoc for the linemen pitted against him with one time shedding both blockers to beat the double team.

Breaux seems to be to enjoying having Kyle Williams has his position coach again – Breaux played under Williams at Ruston High School two years ago.

The Ruston native had a bit of a breakout freshman campaign and he'll be expected to contribute even more for the Tigers in 2025. How he's performed this spring should lend him and the coaches plenty of confidence in continued development and consistency.

Where LSU's offensive line stands

Freshman Coen Echols appears to be pretty entrenched at right guard with the first team offensive line unit right now. Bo Bordelon opened spring in that spot but seems to have taken a step back.

In the 20 minutes the media viewed practice, D.J. Chester took all first-team snaps at center as Virginia Tech transfer junior Braelin Moore continued to work behind him in the rotation. Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson was at second-team right tackle Tuesday.

The full two units along the offensive line for LSU was as follows: Tyree Adams at left tackle, Paul Mubenga at left guard, Chester, Echols and Weston Davis at right tackle with first team; Carius Curne at left tackle, Ory Williams at left guard, Moore, Bordelon and Thompson.
